Lisa Shahno

My research into Create Europe also revealed the 2009 Best Avant-garde award winner, Lisa Shahno, for her collection 'Squaring The Square'. Now maths was never really my best subject at school (‘if she paid as much attention to the equations as she does coordinating her calculator, text-book and exercise book, her marks would surely be greatly improved’…) but I think I just about get the principle behind Lisa’s collection- each design is based on a division principle, and the whole collection is constructed from rectangular pieces of fabric of various length and width. This includes squares sewn together to make rectangles- in fact curves are only used in two designs.

As if that wasn’t complicated enough, some of the pieces are reversible, and can be unfolded to create pieces of abstract artwork…in fact this is certainly an example of a collection where the creative process is just as inspiring as the final outcome. The Moscow based designer studies Costume Design at the Moscow State University of design and Technology, and was the co-founder of ‘In the Buddka’, projects that saw her design toys and produce illustrations, and it is clearly this varied background that has allowed her to create such unique garments. Lisa is certainly a designer to keep an eye on over the next few years…who knows where else maths will take her?
