After graduating from Central Saint Martin’s, the ingenious designer behind the Bodybound label, Kim-Choong-Wilkins, took is first steps by working for the likes of Alexander McQueen, Ermenigildo Zegna and Matthew Williamson, before setting up his own sensational menswear brand that has taken the fashion industry by storm. For his AW12 collection, the designer appropriately labeled it ‘Dystopia,’ taking inspiration from Aldous Huxley’s novel ‘Brave New World’ and from epic modern cinematic features such as Blade Runner, Tron and 2001 Space Odyssey, giving us a rare insight into the bewitching dogmas and dream-like realities of a dystopian future.
Opening with a bronze coated metallic knit jacket, followed by a gold encrusted knit top paired with slim fit striped trousers, and metal zip detailing at the ankles, the designer transported us to a futuristic space-age era, where myth and legend are the norm and the supernatural is equal to the everyday. Offering us an explosion of embellished laser-cut tops, silver studded black vests, techno fabric t-shirts, plaid and soft tweed tailored trousers, performance fabric coats and transparent PVC trenches worn with similarly fabricated shorts, the designer leaves us utterly gob smacked and whooping with delight as he fulfills his mission to ‘pump sex back into a craft that has become lust-less.’

Swiss designer, Julian Zigerli, launched his eponymous brand almost immediately after graduating from the University of Art in Berlin, with his first collection being shortlisted for the Swiss Design Prize in 2011. Using innovative Swiss textiles and cutting-edge techniques, Zigerli presented us with a vibrant collection of whimsical pieces designed to have us contemplating over the playful laws of the extraordinary.
Encapsulating the mischievous aesthetic, models opened the show wearing pink organic knitted jumpers paired with blue knit shorts and flowery print puffer vests with back pouches and printed trousers to match. Following closely behind came techno fabric vests with similarly inserted backpacks paired with slim fit trousers and laser cut mustard gloves, whilst elsewhere we saw pastel green candy prints and baby pink polo shirts teamed with off duty trousers. Embellished parkas, light jersey-silk tops and a printed shirt worn with khaki trousers and a pure white anorak were presented to close this fantastic show, which had us relishing in the delights of Zigerli’s experimental and daring bravado.

Young British designer, Frank Philips, is the mastermind behind menswear brand Tobefrank. Inspired by the polished style of the original gentleman, Philips’ designs are rooted in romanticism and abstract expression, charmingly translated in this season’s collection with models wearing contemporary trench inspired coats, tailored wool and velvet trousers, shirts with dismantled, asymmetrical collars, and traditional chunky knits, each carrying a bouquet of red roses to finish the look.
Double-breasted jackets were shown in Bordeaux red alongside fluid silk-mix trousers, whilst parkas were given an elegant twist with longer backs resembling evening tails. Philips updated her designs with finer details such as double collars on variedly coloured shirts and bright neon bands encompassing trouser hemlines, adding an understated modern edge to this outstanding collection.
