AQUASCUTUM – LONDON FASHION WEEK AW12 WOMENSWEAR

The venerable story of Aquascutum and its place in British sartorial and military history ensured that the newly restored interior of another great institution – the Savoy – was the perfect setting for Joanna Sykes’ third collection for the brand. Thanks in part to Christopher Bailey at Burberry, British heritage brands are a firm fixture in the style landscape of 21st century fashion. It’s a no-brainer: when brands with a unique historical narrative can draw on their backstory and update it for contemporary consumers they manage to combine the best of the past with the best of the future.

Such was the case at Aquascutum this afternoon. Highlights included softly cocooned coats, tweeds and a particularly show-stopping floor-length black dress with a draped sash at the back. Peplum jackets complimented the tailoring backstory to the brand, while leather panels and fluid silks were a refreshing touch among heritage fabrics.

The brand’s military history was referenced in the colour palette of oxblood and olive/khaki and the reworking of the epaulette was reminiscent of officers at the Crimea. The beauty of this was to take a historical - in part costume – detail, and rework it into a minimal aesthetic to create a silhouette that chimes perfectly with the modern wardrobe.
