BERNARD CHANDRAN – LONDON FASHION WEEK AW12 WOMENSWEAR

Statuesque, upright collars gave a powerful, architectural aspect to Bernard Chandran’s Autumn/ Winter 2012 collection. The designer has developed a style for sharp, structured forms in previous seasons, which remained prominent in the clean lines and design details in this show. Sharp slices were cut-out of shoulders, tailored into points, to give a subtle hard edge. The silhouettes remained mostly straight and minimal, emphasising the form of design details on collars and shoulders. However the show featured some clean-cut cocktail dresses in soft, cotton fabrics with more intricate drapery around the waistline, creating volume from waves and folds in the skirts.

Opulence was contributed from an extravagantly sequinned bright red collar, glittering necklines and cocktail dresses shimmering with embellishment. Sheer and transparent fabrics recurred throughout, including lace and clear plasticized materials, heavily embellished with glittering sequins or cut out droplets of dark contrasting fur. These fabrics were combined creatively, to result in an interesting, cohesive and textural collection of elegant evening and formal wear.
