U.MI-1 – LONDON FASHION WEEK SS12

Upon entering the Freemason’s Hall for the U.Mi-1 presentation, everything appears dark. But then slowly you see a projected movie upon one wall. Within this movie are two male models against a white screen posing for the video camera and looking at each other’s outfits, admiring the clothing, helping each other into matching jackets, or sometimes out of the jacket so you can see the shirts and braces underneath.

Looking to the right you then see a vast room. This room had standing there two male models already in beautiful suits and jackets. Slowly more and more models enter and are placed strategically into the room.

Once all models are in place that is when everyone is allowed in to get a closer look at the outfits and the tailoring, the material and the finer detail.

This set-up almost seems to be like a performance art piece. There is music playing, models standing perfectly still in their poses, whilst the fashion public are allowed to look round the models at all angles and take images to their heart’s content.

The clothes on display show off U.Mi-1’s cubist influence with which the brand is becoming known for. The staple within the clothing seems to be the Prince of Wales check which U.Mi-1 uses as the backdrop to colours such as blue and khaki which then creates depth within the tailored jackets and trousers. The shirts are then put into complementary hues of blue, white and cream to create a wonderful playful palette and break up the outfits. These colours used together add a new dimension to the signature sharp lines used within previous collections.
