DESIGNER – ALEX MATTSSON SS12

Experimental designers have long been trying to find the limit of what someone will actually wear. It’s a question no less pertinent to menswear, particularly in the age of Riccardo Tisci’s bird of paradise blazers. Swedish transplant Alex Mattsson adds his unique voice to that debate with his SS12 lookbook, albeit in a way that specifically seems to celebrate London— his offering is all Rock and Roll with some references to South Bank skate culture and a little Los Angeles swagger thrown in for good measure.

As a person who always picks the bus seat next to the person who looks the most like Sid Vicious, I would love to see guys out and about in Mattsson’s designs—particularly the padlock-inspired choker and uniquely proportioned white tux with flame detailing. There’s even a black leather vest that I’m dying to add to my own wardrobe, gender barriers be damned. Regardless of labels like menswear and womenswear, it is the creative detail that matters.
