DESIGNER – NATSUMI ZAMA

Natsumi Zama’s fashion designs are inspired by traditional Japanese clothing, and her most recent work entitled “2 -> 3” explores the transition of fabric from two-dimensional to three-dimensional forms.  Each garment, when laid flat, looks as though it is mounted on a large expanse of square fabric, but when worn on the body this backdrop transforms into sweeping folds that dress the figure in pleats and fluted shapes.

I like the way that Natsumi Zama has used everyday garments to illustrate her concept, such as clean white shirts and tailored jackets. I think this makes her ideas relatable and accessible, whilst highlighting the dramatic change that can be made by adding one large panel of fabric. My favourite piece is an elegant, pure white maxi dress. The plentiful folds and pleats that are created in the three-dimensional form are remarkable and create an graceful, ethereal style; it is inspiring to see how a simple flat shape can become so powerful and dramatic when draped upon the human body.
