ILLUSTRATOR – ANDREW CLARK

One of the alleged benefits of being of an artist is the ability to see the world in surprising and delightful ways. Andrew Clark, a London-based illustrator whose work has been featured in Time Out and Wallpaper* amongst others, puts his kaleidoscopic vision onto the page.

I like Clark because his quirky viewpoint, with which he’s explored topics as wide-ranging as politicians and a rhinoceros, lends even the most intense subject matter a momentary sweetness (including, but not limited to, an atomic bomb). The fruits of his fascination with pattern are repeated designs that I would love to see on a piece of clothing. His work almost reminds me of watercolor paintings– the color palate is whimsical but still somehow sombre, his sense of gentle humor is apparent, and his technical skill at times astounding. So astounding, in fact, that there were moments I couldn’t tell if I was looking at an illustration or a photograph—although I realize now, upon further reflection, that it was probably a mix between the two.
