INSTALLATION – YASUTOKI KARIYA

Student Yasutoki Kariya re invented the universal desktop gadget, Newton’s Cradle, using light bulbs for his final project.  Titled Asobi which translates roughly as ‘playing’, the 11 bulb installation creates a visual interpretation of the popular toy named after Sir Isaac Newton demonstrating his third law of motion regarding momentum.

I remember when I was a child and found the kenetic toys amazing – I Could actually spend hours playing with it wondering why only the end steel balls would move and how it generated a pattern.  What I love about Yasutoki’s work is that although he is taking a basic rule (momentum) as his foundation he has cleverly created something more mesmerising than the original – this sort of talent is very rare. I would’ve have loved to have been exposed to this when I was younger.
