PHOTOGRAPHER – AMANDA M. JANSSON AND EMMA ELINA KEIRA JONES

Amanda M. Jansson and Emma Elina Keira Jones are a photography duo. Their grainy analogue photos make me wonder if they, like me, were children in the 90s, fed on a diet of teen films such as The Virgin Suicides, The craft, and The Blair Witch Project. There’s certainly a sinister darkness to the woodland setting that reminds me of the latter 1999 horror film.

The feeling that their work is tinged with pop culture references continues in the shots of a waif-like model, one with her wrapped in fairy lights – something which seemed to me like a strong reference to Corinne Day’s depiction of Kate Moss. The image of the three girls lying on the grass feels distinctly Sophia Coppola to me too. Most of all, the images remind me of being a teenager – the soft, moody lighting, the rebellious smoking that goes in in many of the pictures, and experimentation with cosmetics; all rites of passage of growing up.
