PHOTOGRAPHER – MARGARET DUROW

One of the things that first struck me about Margaret Durow’s photography is how her subjects hardly ever look at the camera; it left me wondering why, and who they were. Her grainy, honest style captures a spirit within her subjects (who cut a lonely figure) of the fleeting intensity of adolescence, the pictures making me think of blurry memories captured in still images.

Maybe it’s the soft lighting in the shots, making them seem to have been taken late in the afternoon, almost at sunset, that gives her work that dusky atmospheric feel. There’s a dreamy quality that I can’t put my finger on, which makes it all the more intriguing.
