SINGER – RUSSIAN RED/ 16.07.12

 

When I first heard the name ‘Russian Red’ I thought it was a luxury cigarette brand. Then I realised that it’s that of a young Madrileña who some refer to as the Spanish Feist.

 

 

Lourdes Hernández first picked up a guitar at the age of 5, then in the following years she started writing her own songs which slowly evolved into the sensationally talented artist she is today.

 

 

I have to be honest, I was captivated by her music before I even knew who she was. I had a year ago seen the film Room in Rome by Julio Medem and it was the recurring song on the soundtrack called Loving Strangers which kept me hooked throughout the film.

 

 

However it took somebody else to send me the track Cigarettes (a beautiful irony considering what I initially thought of her pseudonym) for me to finally know who she was. Immediately my mind identified her with that distinctly uplifting voice I had heard a year prior to that moment.

 

 

I find she’s sort of shone a brighter light on what the youths of Spain’s music scene currently have to offer. I curse myself for not having looked her up the instant I’d heard her incredible voice…  So don’t waste time like I did, you hear something you like, you look them up, so your friend doesn’t take credit for having “discovered” a newly emerging artist who also comes from your own home country.
