Continuing with our Emerging Trends analysis, today we are focusing on the laser-cut technique for AW12. Leather laser-cut skirts, pants and tops is something we have seen before but different interpretations were adopted by the designers this time.

This pattern-cutting technique was reinvented this AW12 with patterns that resembled lace or flowers and other geometrical shapes. Starting off in London, Erdem opted for elegant bold flower and brocade shaped laser-cuts on a canary yellow fabric and Marios Schwab for flower detailed and laser-cut lace. Emerging designer Yasmin Kianfar has made the laser-cut technique a signature of hers and showed small petal shapes on black dresses for AW12.

In Paris we also saw some different and interesting laser-cuts. Sarah Burton presented exquisitely designed silver laser-cut dresses that featured circular shapes, while Isabel Marant’s laser-cuts on leather tops and dresses were inspired by the Far West. At Carven large geometrical shapes formed circles and were seen on suede dresses and skirts. Last but not least, Manish Arora’s take on the trend was quirky and fun due to the shiny green and red fabrics he used for his detailed laser-cut patterns.
