The Big Cover Up

This month we’re looking to the new SS12 collections for inspiration on how to work the ‘modesty’ trend. Across the womenswear spectrum, the look was all about creating an air of intrigue, as blouses, skirts and dresses played upon the notion of ‘less is more’ when it came to revealing skin.

High necked, buttoned blouses were seen at Erdem, Margaret Howell and Dries Van Noten, as the white shirt was re-envisioned with soft patterns and florals for a grown up, vintage feel. Sleeves worn long and buttoned at the wrist captured the essence of the ‘workwear’ aesthetic, seen most prominently at Jil Sander in an all-white ensemble that exuded simple reserve.

Skirts and dresses reference the ‘umbrella’ silhouette, with a-line cuts, pleats and gathered fabric giving volume to longer lengths. The look takes its cue from classic notions of femininity, with soft, flowing fabrics, cinched-in waists and a muted colour palette retaining a feminine, youthful edge to this very proper trend. Menswear too, advocates this season’s penchant for more coverage, with designs focusing on elegant, buttoned shirts and masculine cuts that typify British reserve.
