Sensible Shoes

Our Forecast for the coming month advocates the functionality of footwear, with towering heels and precarious stilettos replaced by flats.

On the Spring/Summer runways, there was a visible shift towards traditional daywear shoes, with more casual designs contrasted with smarter, ‘workwear’ inspired brogues and loafers. Across womenswear collections such as Aquascutum, Ann-Sofie Back Atelje and Antipodium, tailored looks with skirts and shorts were given an unexpected androgynous twist with flats that emphasised a business aesthetic. The notion of mobility and action could be seen on the runways of ACNE and JW Anderson, where casual loafers and more sports-inspired designs juxtaposed the femininity of the looks, with ACNE adding a playful edge to their collection through tasselled loafers in bright, iridescent hues.

At Topman Design, men’s loafers came in an array of vibrant colours, as a slightly smarter, but still summery alternative to sandals or sport shoes. Menswear collections utilized the formal edge given by brogues, lace-ups and loafers to juxtapose casual shorts and rolled-hem trousers, providing more of a transitional SS12 look that combined light layers and relaxed cuts with practical, functional footwear.
