Our key focus for this season is the proliferation of white, showing up in SS12 menswear collections, resort collections and the London Fashion Week previews looks as seen in our editorial. Designers are taking this colour, previously the paragon of simplicity, and mixing tones, fabrics, lengths and layers to create a look that is elaborate and complex. The key here is all about contrast, however subtle that may be – mixing fabrics, layering different
tones of white and juxtaposing textured pieces.

Head-to-toe white looks as seen at Givenchy, Kimberley Ovitz and Thom Browne exhibit these contrasting features, taking this simple and pure colour and experimenting with features such as sheer panelling, fringeing, tassels and layered lengths. At Elie Tahari, the floor length white dress has loose sheer sleeves, a gathered waistband and a knotted turban giving the look an elaborate, multi-dimensional feeling.

Across the menswear collections all-white tailoring has dominated, as seen at Dior and Givenchy where details such as tonal contrasts, satin lapels and headwear complete the looks. White also prevailed in men’s sportswear, with Moncler Gamme Bleu crafting a hooded mac worn over a tailored white blazer and shorts, off-white satin tie and white footwear, contrasting the sharp tailoring of the jacket with loose-fitting outerwear.
