SS12 wasn’t just a time for woman’s hemlines to rise but for men’s too. High-waisted Minimal Shorts emulated underwear as outerwear at labels like Proenza Schouler. To keep proportions in check, shorts were often paired with longer over- layers like at Jason Wu. Cover-ups on top were pristine to make sure that the look regained elegance. To keep things equal, men’s shorts were also miniscule and likewise paired with Long sleeve protective tops. As an example, this was the case at Mugler – where modesty was recovered and the look remained in control.

Looking to Balenciaga’s short shorts the proportions were exaggerated further by boxy colour blocked jackets with gargantuan shoulders. These jackets remained modern thanks to an element of sports luxe with scuba belts. After what feels like an age of concealing lengths and disguisable layering – it will be interesting to see whether we follow forth, strip off the layers beneath and venture out to experience these new heights.
